PowerDNS supports the launch of 1&1’s 5G network

Jan 26, 2024

At the end of last year, 1&1 announced the availability of its 5G network for mobile internet subscribers in Germany – this made 1&1 the fourth network provider in Germany, alongside Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica. It was also, according to final case law in Germany, the launch of “the most modern 5G network in Europe”, based on the use of the innovative Open RAN (Open Radio Access Network) technology.

1u1 5G Open RAN Launch incl PowerDNS

Open RAN is a technology concept that introduces additional and open interfaces for previously proprietary components of the Radio Access Network (RAN). This is intended to promote openness and interoperability in the RAN of a mobile network, prevent dependencies on individual providers and increase the variety of options. In addition, it supports the move to networks generally becoming more intelligent and automated. The greater flexibility of Open RAN also promises to reduce costs.

In the case of 1&1, its brand new 5G network – 1&1 O-RAN – is based on the innovative Open RAN solution from Rakuten Symphony and the support of more than 80 other vendors worldwide. Rakuten Symphony aims to make it possible to ‘launch and operate advanced mobile services in a fraction of the time and cost of conventional approaches.’ At the same time, network quality and security need to remain state-of-the-art.

Unlike network architectures that are only provided by one manufacturer, the 1&1 O-RAN has standardized Open RAN interfaces. This means that 1&1 can work flexibly with the highest quality vendors in the market.

We are proud to have been recognized by 1&1 and Rakuten Symphony as such a partner, with PowerDNS being an integral part of the new 1&1 5G network via Rakuten Symphony’s Open RAN solution.

With the help of our PowerDNS for 5G solution, 1&1's new 5G network DNS meets the highest standards of 5G performance and security. Cloud-native PowerDNS in the 5G network also gives 1&1 a highly scalable and efficient solution to help it achieve its ambitious 5G goals.
